The Southeast Texas Oilers youth football team volunteered at the Giving Field on Liberty Street in Beaumont on March 15.

Twelve team members as well as several board members, coaches, and parents harvested 14 pounds of kale, which is enough to feed 56 people in need, Giving Field founder Sharon Begnaud explained to the volunteers.

The team also gathered eggs from the coop and planted beans.

The 74th annual YMBL South Texas State Fair is underway on the grounds of Ford Park in Beaumont. Live music has always be a part of the fair, but this year, the YMBL has partnered with Outlaw Nation Red Dirt Revival to bring in some of the best regional entertainment both weekends. Friday, March 31, performing will be Will Carter and Steve Griggs Band. From Katy, Carter was the lead singer of the Texas country act The Emotions, but after graduation from Texas A&M, he pursued a solo career with his own original music.

A 38-year-old federal inmate has been sentenced for assaulting a prison guard in the Eastern District of Texas, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston March 28.

Montreal Delaney, of New Orleans, pleaded guilty on June 1, 2016, to assaulting a federal officer and was subsequently sentenced to 33 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Ron Clark.

The Beaumont City Council voted March 21 in favor of an ordinance declaring three properties public nuisances for accumulating excess litter and thereby providing shelter and  a breeding ground for rodents and mosquitoes. The owners of three properties must clean up their yards within 10 days. If they don’t, the city is going to do it for them, and the owners will have to pay for the cleanup efforts or face civil action, like having liens placed on the properties.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Beaumont man March 13 who is a suspect in multiple burglaries, and recovered 15 grams of methamphetamine during the subsequent investigation, reports Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Captain Crystal Holmes.

According to a news release from Holmes, at about 2:30 p.m., deputies stopped a black Mitsubishi matching the description of a vehicle involved in several Beaumont burglaries highlighted on Crimestoppers.

United States Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao welcomed the newest vessel to the Maritime Security Program (MSP) in the strategic Port of Beaumont during a naming ceremony at the port March 3. Renamed the M/V Liberty Passion, it is the third ship owned by Liberty Global Logistics to join the MSP fleet.

A Beaumont woman was indicted for deadly conduct by a Jefferson County grand jury March 8 for allegedly firing a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson multiple times toward her ex-husband who, she told an officer, had "screwed her out of so much," according to a probable cause affidavit for her arrest. Lois Gayle Fontenot, 65, faces third-degree felony charges for the Feb. 7 incident, which she reportedly called "a crazy moment."

A Beaumont man has been arrested and was indicted March 8 for his suspected role in a game room robbery that occurred Jan. 4, reports the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office.
