Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Marcus McLellan reports deputies in the department are investigating an apparent self-inflicted shooting that occurred May 4.

According to McLellan, JCSO responded to a call of a self-inflicted gunshot at 3410 North Twin City Hwy. in Nederland. Upon arrival, deputies found a male subject on the floor of the residence with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound. The male subject was transported by Acadian EMS to St. Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont where he remains in critical condition.

At approximately 7:19 p.m. on April 28, Beaumont Fire Rescue units responded to a structure fire at 2070 Oakland. When firefighters arrived, they found the structure fully involved by flames. Firefighters made a defensive attack and were able to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes. The building appears to have been vacant with no utilities connected. The fire appears to be deliberate, and the building is a total loss.

Joseph Colone Jr. asserts he’s an innocent man in search of justice, but Jefferson County Assistant District Attorney Pat Knauth outlined a case before 252nd District Judge Raquel West’s court on Tuesday, April 25, set to invoke the death penalty as the preferred outcome of justice in this case. Testimony is still ongoing, and will proceed into next week.

The 2017 Jefferson County Go Texan Cook-Off is set for April 21 and 22 at the Elk’s Lodge, 11431 Highway 90, Beaumont. The two-day event will raise funds for local youth.

“This is the last major event of the year for us (JCGT),” said Jay LeBlanc, Jefferson County Go Texan ambassador. “We want everyone to come out, grab a great meal and help us in giving our stand-out local youth scholarships.”

The Betty Greenberg Center for Performing Arts is in the midst of hosting “Steel Magnolias” for three shows this weekend beginning Friday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m. and two on Saturday, April 15, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Written by Robert Harling as a play, “Steel Magnolias” made its Off-Broadway debut in 1987 then was adapted as a big screen release in 1989 starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirly MacLaine, Julia Roberts and Daryl Hannah. It finally made its Broadway debut in 2005 at the Lyceum Theatre.

Police units were at the Federal Courthouse in Beaumont on April 10 investigating a report of a "suspicious package," according to officers at the scene at about 2:30 p.m.

One officer said all seems well as investigators wrap up the investigation. Pearl Street was blocked at Calder, and other side streets surrounding the courthouse were blocked off as a safety precaution.

Dr. Jimmy Simmons said he was asked to continue to serve as part of the Beaumont ISD Board of Mangers by Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath to assist in making a smooth transition to an elected Board of Trustees after the May election.

“It was a tough decision,” Simmons said, but he agreed to stay on. According to him, the request to stay was one directed at the entire panel of Board of Managers members, who have been in place for nearly three years already. The group unanimously accepted the elongated call of duty.
