Due to the recent rain Orange County is offering free sandbags at three locations. The first location is at 10375 N. Hwy 87 in Orange, the second is at 2505 W. Roundbunch (FM 1442) in Bridge City and the third is at 345 Claiborne St. in Vidor. Those picking up sandbags are asked to bring their own shovel.

Police in Port Arthur are investigating an industrial accident that claimed the life of a 21-year-old Bridge City man on Aug. 17, reports Deputy Chief Martin Blitch.

According to Blitch, Port Arthur Police Department (PAPD) officers responded to the 8700 Old Ferry Rd, Tubal-Caine Marine Services, in reference to a man down at approximately 1:34 p.m. on Friday. The initial investigation indicated that Tyler Winfree of Bridge City was pronounced deceased at the scene. Judge Mark DeRouen has ordered an autopsy.

April 11, at 10:24 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received calls of a vehicle that drove off into the water on FM 365 near Hillebrandt Bayou. Callers said the driver exited the vehicle and ran across a field.

Deputies were dispatched to the area to look for him and recover the vehicle. Deputies searched the area while the vehicle was being pulled from the water. A check of the license plate indicated that it was stolen earlier that morning in Bridge City. Bridge City police advised that the suspect in the robbery was believed to be armed and dangerous.

Bridge City High School students Carissa Slaughter and Madison Day earned first place in Declamation and Interpretive Reading, respectively, at the school-level finals of the 114th Miriam Lutcher Stark Contest in Reading and Declamation, a scholarship program sponsored by the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation.

Two locals were arrested by multiple agencies for possession of child pornography last week, according to The Texas Attorney General's office.


PN-G quarterback commits to UT

Port Neches-Groves incoming junior quarterback Roschon Johnson recently took to his Twitter account to announce that he has verbally committed to play football at the University of Texas.

Johnson (6-1, 190) threw for 2,364 yards last season and ran for 1,488 while being named the 25-5A MVP.


Silsbee senior Kalon Barnes has been declared the fastest athlete this season by the University of Interscholastic League as he won three medals (two gold) while setting a new Class 4A in the 100-meters May 13 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin.

His winning time of 10.22 eclipsed the old 4A record of 10.26 set in 2002 by DaBryan Blanton of Forney High School.

Later that day, Barnes earned his second gold medal by winning the 200-meters in 21.48.


Deputies have arrested three suspects related to the May 8 kidnapping and burglary of Orange attorney Jim Sharon Bearden Jr., reported Orange County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) Captain Cliff Hargrave. 


Port Arthur police are still searching for a woman who hit a Port Arthur police officer with her car, PAPD Officer Michael Hebert said in a statement on Feb. 13.


Brian Sattler, director of public relations at Lamar University since 1989 and resident of Bridge City, was honored with the university’s 2016 Julie & Ben Rogers Community Service Award at a Dec. 6 program in the University Event Center of the Mary and John Gray Library.

The Rogers family established the award in 1979 to encourage Lamar University faculty and staff to volunteer their service and talents to the community.
