Silsbee senior Kalon Barnes has been declared the fastest athlete this season by the University of Interscholastic League as he won three medals (two gold) while setting a new Class 4A in the 100-meters May 13 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin.

His winning time of 10.22 eclipsed the old 4A record of 10.26 set in 2002 by DaBryan Blanton of Forney High School.

Later that day, Barnes earned his second gold medal by winning the 200-meters in 21.48.

The Rogers family established the award in 1979 to encourage Lamar University faculty and staff to volunteer their service and talents to the community.

The right lane of the Veterans Memorial Bridge on eastbown SH 73 will be closed today from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. for maintenance and inspection, TxDOT said in a release.

The Veterans Memorial Bridge is the eastbound side of 73 going over the Neches River towards Bridge City. The historic Rainbow Bridge, built in 1936, carries traffic on the westbound side of 73.

A one-vehicle crash on FM 1006 in Orange County claimed the life of a Bridge City man March 26, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis reported in a news release. 

According to Trooper Davis, the crash occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. in front of the DuPont Plant, just one mile south of Orange. A 2000 Toyota passenger car was southbound on FM 1006 when the driver lost control of the vehicle and traveled off the roadway. The vehicle rolled over several times before coming to rest off-road.
