Dorothy and Arthur Champagne

These days it is pretty normal for a man to kiss a woman on the second or third date, but in 1949, Arthur Champagne kissed his wife for the first time on the very day he proposed to her – after she said yes, of course. Dorothy and Arthur Champagne, residents of Calder Woods, will celebrate 67 years of marriage this year, and they thought it would be fun to share their old-fashioned yet adorable love story to inspire couples throughout Beaumont.

Their love story starts in a grocery store in Port Arthur.

Lloyd Beaman as Santa Claus

Playing Santa Claus is, of course, seasonal work. But during that season, you could certainly say that Lloyd Beaman is doing it full time, and has been since 2014.

In fact, the retired Beaumont native and Beaumont High School grad has been playing Santa Claus at special events since the ’70s.

Connie Dickinson, a lovely Calder Woods resident, defies all we think we know about aging. To put it mildly, this woman is simply amazing. Connie has a Texas-sized heart for others and demonstrates it in her many volunteer efforts, and she says she has no plans for slowing down any time soon. She will celebrate her 100th birthday on Oct. 18.

The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) has selected Calder Woods for a new Reminiscence Therapy program designed to help residents with dementia.

Reminiscence Therapy uses tangible prompts, such as tactile objects, recordings and familiar items, to stimulate discussion of past activities and experiences, according to the DADS website.

Calder Woods is one of 50 facilities DADS chose to be a part of the program with an additional 50 to be added in 2016.
