The holiday road hasn’t been kind to the Lamar men’s basketball team. After opening the season 8-1, LU dropped the next four games and will head into the Southland Conference opener on Thursday, Dec. 28, with an 8-4 record as the Houston Baptist Huskies at the Montagne Center at 7 p.m.

Both Lamar University basketball programs were picked to finish at the top of the Southland Conference standings. And if early progress is any indication, the Cardinals could be looking at two conference titles.

The men’s team is now 5-1 after a 66-52 win over UTEP in El Paso on Nov. 27. The Cards, who got double-doubles from senior Zjori Bosha and junior Josh Nzeakor, jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back. The victory equals the best start for the Cardinals since the 2008-09 season.

Squandering a 14-3 halftime lead in the season opener at home Sept. 3 against FCS No. 16 Coastal Carolina, the Lamar Cardinals were outscored 35-0 in the second half to lose 38-14.

The Lady Cardinal golf team posted a wire-to-wire victory, leading all three rounds to capture the UTRG Invitational on March 9, then followed that up with a dominating 19-stroke win in the Bulldog Invitational hosted by The Citadel on March 15.
