CCA Star

Fishing along the coast kicked into high gear this past weekend, with good numbers of trout, flounder and even king mackerel being caught.

One of the best fishing reports I’ve got is from Sabine Lake guide Jerry Norris. His top catches of trout, along with a few reds, have been around the rigs east of the jetties in 20 to 25 feet of water.

Sabine guide Dickey Colburn reports that he’s catching some pretty good numbers of trout and reds on the upper end of the lake. Most of his fish are being caught on soft plastics fished under cork rigs. His best jigs have been Usual Suspects and Li’ Johns.

On the lower end of Sabine Lake, guide Colby Denbow reports good catches of trout and big reds at the jetties on Down South plastics in key lime.

The summer-long Coastal Conservation Association STAR tourney posted some impressive stats that were topped off by solid trout caught from one end of the Texas coast to the other. But even more important is the catch by Laken Bellanger of Orange.

As of this week, three lucky anglers who were signed up for the CCA STAR tourney have caught tagged redfish. Each of them has won a Ford truck, and a 23-foot Haynie boat, motor and trailer.

The very popular Coastal Conservation Association STAR tournament starts Saturday, May 25, and runs through Sept. 2. If you’ll be fishing this tournament like thousands of other anglers across Texas, now is the time hit Sabine Lake and maybe catch a tagged red — or better yet, a double-digit trout.
