For over 70 years and under various names, the Shorkey Center has offered educational and therapeutic services for children with special needs.

This year marks their 25th annual holiday card campaign, which executive director Araina Daniels said is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers.

“Profits from our … sales are used to offset the cost of high quality therapy services [given] to deserving students who otherwise may not be able to afford it,” Daniels said.

While Dec. 25 is not the actual day on which Christ was born, it is the date on which we celebrate His birth. And while this celebration has been associated with many traditions, some of which distract from the importance of His birth, they do not distract from the imperative of His birth. Some say that Jesus was a great man, or a great prophet. Others, believing the biblical account, affirm that He is God. This raises the question why did God need to or have to become a man? And what is necessity of the Incarnation?

The big week is almost here, and for me, it is a big week indeed. My birthday is Dec. 23, and then we have the blessed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For those of us celebrating a different kind of Christmas this year for whatever reason, please let me assure you with confidence that God knows all about each of our Christmases and what we will have and what we will not have.

Rose Bottley brings toilet paper to the party.

At its annual Toilet Paper Tea on Thursday, Dec. 8, Southeast Texas Hospice encouraged attendees to bring an item to stock the office’s shelves for the new year and provide more end of life services in the Golden Triangle area.

Its first Christmas open house was held after moving into a new 4,500-square-foot office.

“My initial reaction was I’m not going to be able to pay the rent, much less provide toilet paper and lightbulbs,” said Mary McKenna, executive director. She invited people to bring these items to keep the organization afloat.
