Surrounded by family, friends, colleagues and admirers, nine Beaumont school teachers were celebrated like the superstars they are when the Beaumont A&M Club presented its 58th annual Outstanding Teacher Awards on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

There is a pitched battle still being waged in Austin over the future of Texas education, but it is not a partisan fight per se. It is among competing factions of Republicans in the Legislature, with Democrats relegated largely to the sidelines by GOP majorities in both houses. Calvin Walker is a lousy bookkeeper.

That was the sentiment shared by Beaumont Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Carrol Thomas on Thursday night, July 26, after the Board of Trustees voted 4-2 to extend the district’s electrical contract with the 51-year-old Walker for another year.
