Lamar math instructor Gary Brice said he started out writing a book to pay “homage to a special place and special people,” but ended up writing a timely memoir about racial tensions.

“The Birds, Their Carols Raise” was previously published as an e-book called “Nacogdoches, 1960.”

What is love? Everyone has his or her own take on what the short four-letter word means, and the Bible has much to say about it as well. While Dec. 25 is not the actual day on which Christ was born, it is the date on which we celebrate His birth. And while this celebration has been associated with many traditions, some of which distract from the importance of His birth, they do not distract from the imperative of His birth. More often than not, he will be mean, excessively so, to one person for a week or two, and then completely switch his allegiance and turn on someone new within his circle. And believe me, after watching this trait demonstrated on several occasions, I can find no fault with the one that is chosen for that particular week. He or she will not have done anything demonstrating ill will, unkindness, or evil toward this person.

Last Saturday’s teal season opener was about the best many hunters had seen in years. Based on field reports that I’ve heard, lots of teal began showing up about a week prior to the opener on flooded crawfish ponds and rice fields west of Beaumont and on over toward Winnie.

Kenney Vaughan and his kids hunted on a flooded field near China for the opener, and they had plenty of birds coming to the decoys.
