Fun in a nutshell at Groves Pecan Festival 2017

It’s time to celebrate the lovely pecan as the 48th annual Groves Pecan Festival is now four full days beginning Thursday, Oct. 26, and running through Sunday, Oct. 29, at Lions Park (6200 Jackson). If you are looking for “fun,” you can find it in a “nutshell.”

Families are welcome to attend and eat your way through the food area with ice cream, funnel cakes, pecan pie, curly fries, gumbo, hamburgers, barbecue, pork-a-bobs, boudain balls, nachos, pistolettes, breakfast food then you can wash it down with freshly squeezed homemade lemonade.

Want fall tomatoes? The time is now if you want to try your hand at growing fall tomatoes. Never tried it? Well, just about now, when your spring tomatoes are a big mess in the garden and overwrought with heat and not producing, is just about time to put in the delicious fall tomatoes. This should give us just about enough time to have some yummy tomatoes before the first freeze. (Yes, it will get cold again.)

I don’t know about you all, but about this time of year, I’m getting anxious for a little cool weather. And not all of us head to Market Basket or H-E-B for our pumpkins and squash when its time to start fall decorating and cooking. Lots of you all have already prepared and planted your fall gardens and are ready to pick those squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, potatoes and more. In fact, many local gardeners can just walk into their backyard and pick what they need. Would you like to try? It’s just not that difficult.
