We didn’t leave the dock until about 10:30 last Thursday morning, but it really didn’t matter. The weather was drop-dead perfect for fishing on Sabine Lake.

Some really good stuff is in store for both hunters and fishermen this week in East and Southeast Texas.

First of all, we’ve got a Canadian front moving through this weekend with some pretty cold temperatures. That front will be moving plenty of ducks and geese into Southeast Texas. It’ll also jumpstart the rut in the Pineywoods.

Forget about reds and trout, it’s time to get in on some big time catches of flo

The cool weather associated with last week’s frontal system has dropped water temperatures a few degrees along the coast, and that has set up some very impressive catches of flounder. October is when big-time numbers of flounder begin their migration from the marsh and bays to the Gulf. It’s definitely the easiest time to rack up some impressive numbers of these tasty fish.

Fishing along the coast kicked into high gear this past weekend, with good numbers of trout, flounder and even king mackerel being caught.

One of the best fishing reports I’ve got is from Sabine Lake guide Jerry Norris. His top catches of trout, along with a few reds, have been around the rigs east of the jetties in 20 to 25 feet of water.

Lots of speckled trout, reds and flounder are being caught on Sabine Lake, Keith Lake and Calcasieu on a variety of lures and live baits. The water temperature on Sabine Lake is about 79 degrees.

Some of the best action of the year for both reds and flounder is along the Louisiana shoreline of Sabine Lake. Guide Jerry Norris says he’s catching lots of flounder on Berkley Gulps in pink or white while working the mouths of bayous, and small inlets along the Louisiana shoreline.

The duck season in Southeast Texas is closed in both zones, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get out and do something ducky like brush up a blind, patch up the decoys, and maybe find out where new ducks are falling in and build a back-up blind.
