Lamar University soccer players celebrate a victory

After winning their first regular season Southland Conference title, the Cardinal women’s soccer program grinded its way through the conference tournament and won it. LU defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-0), Central Arkansas (2-1) and SFA (2-0) to advance to the NCAA Tournament after finishing a dismal 2-14-3 last year.

It’s been nearly a month since Lamar football has played a home game at Provost Umphrey Stadium, but that changes this week as the Cardinals look to get their first Southland Conference win of the season on Saturday, Oct. 28, when they host Stephen F. Austin (3-5, 3-3) at 6 p.m.

The Cards (1-6, 0-5) went toe-to-toe with No. 6 ranked Sam Houston State last weekend and found themselves down 33-20 late in the second quarter, but a few miscues quickly turned into a 63-27 loss.

The Cardinals ran into a buzz saw last week at home when they faced Nicholls, a team who should have beaten Texas A&M a few weeks earlier. The Colonels (3-2, 2-1) jumped out to a 20-0 first-half lead and never looked back to roll on 41-14 over Lamar (1-4, 0-4) in front of over 6,000 fans at Provost Umphrey Stadium on Sept. 30.

The Cardinals struggled to move the ball, finishing the night with 237 yards of total offense. LU’s quarterbacks completed 14 of 33 passes for 121 yards with two interceptions by junior transfer Darrell Colbert.

The Lamar Cardinals football team started a tad slow against Division II UT-Permian Basin on Sept. 9 at Provost Umphrey Stadium but then built a 37-6 halftime lead before rolling up a 72-6 win, which was also a first for new head coach Mike Schultz.

It was the most points scored by LU since the Cardinals posted 73 points against Texas College in 2014.
