Attoyac Bayou

A Texas Watershed Steward workshop on water quality related to the Attoyac Bayou watershed will be from 1-5 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Nacogdoches County Exposition and Civic Center, 3805 N.W. Stallings Drive, Nacogdoches.

The free workshop is presented by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board in cooperation with the Texas Water Resources Institute, or TWRI. It is open to anyone interested in improving water quality in the region. Participants are encouraged to preregister at the Texas Watershed Steward website,


The City of Beaumont is beginning a program that could provide free spay and neuter surgeries to pets of eligible Beaumont residents through the city’s Animal Care Division, Animal Care Manager Matthew Fortenberry reports.

Beginning Wednesday, July 19, all visitors will be admitted to Stark Museum of Art and Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center free of charge.


The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), in collaboration with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, the Beaumont Health Department, Beaumont Animal Services and the Texas Department of Transportation, are hosting a Summer Safety Kickoff event on June 3 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. The event will be held at the Beaumont Health Department, located at 3040 College St. in Beaumont.

Celebrate the art, literature, music and cuisine of the region at the launch of the Center for History and Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast.

Dr. Sam Monroe, president of Lamar State College Port Arthur from 1974-2013 and current president of the Port Arthur Historical Society, which operates the Museum of the Gulf Coast, will speak.


The Port Arthur Health Department is offering free HIV testing and complimentary blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, and BMI/weight checks for National Latino HIV and AIDS awareness day Oct. 15.

Port Arthur Health Department (PAHD) said in a release that those who attend “will receive your results in minutes instead of days or weeks.”


Veterans needing legal advice or legal assistance can visit a free legal clinic Saturday, Aug. 20, from 8:30 a.m. – noon at the Lumberton Fire & EMS at 228 Country Lane Drive. The clinic is a public service of the Jefferson County Bar Association, which is part of a coalition of bar associations that provide pro bono legal services to U.S. veterans in 17 counties in Texas.


To honor local veterans and to commemorate Veterans Day, the Jefferson County Bar Association will host the following free events for Jefferson, Hardin, Orange, Chambers and Liberty County veterans and spouses of deceased veterans:

Cameron Sutphin

The Theodore Johns Branch Library will host a free Concert on the Lawn featuring folk singer and guitar player Cameron Sutphin on Saturday, Oct. 10, beginning at 2 p.m. Organizers say bring lawn chairs, beach towels or blankets. Coolers are allowed, but no alcohol is permitted on city property.


This Saturday, October 3, 2015, the City of Beaumont will host a Fire Prevention and Family Safety Festival downtown at the Fire Museum of Texas, at 400 Walnut.

Local residents are encouraged to bring their families to the festival at the “big fire hydrant,” where adults and children alike can receive valuable information on how to protect oneself and one’s family. There will be free food and “lots of free stuff.”
