Smart phones and home gaming consoles seem to have all but killed off the old arcades that Gen Xers fondly remember as favorite hangouts after school. And while you still have a few big mega arcades in Houston like Dave & Buster’s and Main Event that cater as much if not more to adults than kids, and the chain arcade Tilt in Beaumont, the mom-and-pop style arcades that you used to see on almost every street corner in the ’80s and ’90s seem to have faded away.

John Swift will tell you he might not know how to cook, but he knows good food. Swift has been all over the world and has found some great spots. His friends will call him up and tell him what country they are in and he will tell them where to go eat.

Swift, from the Dallas area, officially landed in Beaumont in 2003 with his wife, Suzanne. He’s worked for oil and gas companies, and bought meat and futures contracts for national restaurant chains. Now, he’s a first time restaurateur with Republic Chicken.

The first time I had Frenchy’s chicken, I was living in Houston about 15 years ago, and my co-workers insisted I give it a try. Being from the Beaumont area, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. It was the best fried chicken I’d ever tasted. It had a certain seasoning to it that I never forgot and even craved when I was in the mood for chicken.
