Coach Ray Woodard

Lamar University head football coach Ray Woodard will not return for the 2017 season, Director of Athletics Jason Henderson announced Nov. 21.

“We would like to thank Coach Woodard for all that he has done for the Lamar University football program,” said Henderson. “It still remains our goal to compete for championships and to put our student-athletes in a position to be successful on the field and in the classroom.”

Local track team to compete at Junior Olympics in Houston

This summer, the B.T. Striders Youth Track Club will represent Southeast Texas at one of the highest-level youth track and field events of the year: 2016 AAU National Junior Olympics in Houston. Five athletes from this local team have qualified to compete in this year’s event, which will take place on the Humble High School campus from July 30 – Aug. 6, 2016.

Samurai Showdown

It was an overwhelming success in every capacity as Texas Karate Academy (TKA) held its first Samurai Showdown June 11 as more than 200 competitors from Austin to Baton Rouge filled Wesley Methodist Church in Beaumont.

TKA had 36 students compete, which resulted in 29 first-place awards, nine second-place awards and 15 third-place finishes.

Football championships head back to Arlington

All University Interscholastic League (UIL) football state championship games will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington for the next two years, including the 11-man and six-man football championship games. 

The new schedule places all 12 games in a four-day span, from Dec. 14-17.

Senior Taylor Stockton was named the Southland Conference’s Student-Athlete of the Year for women’s golf. Stockton, a Clear Lake native, becomes the fifth LU women’s golfer to be named student-athlete of the year, joining Casey Cain (2004, 2005), Therese Nilsson (2009), Stine Pederson (2011) and Kelly Erasmus (2015).
