Brothers John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen of New York purchased 6,642 acres of land near Buffalo Bayou in 1836 for a mere $9,428. The Allen brothers named the location Houston after Sam Houston, the hero of the Battle of San Jacinto. The greater Houston area is now home to more than 6 million people, a far cry from 12 that called it home in 1837.

NRG Stadium

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) announced that the 2015 UIL Football State Championship games will be played at NRG Stadium in Houston.

All 11-man UIL Football Championship Games will be played December 17-19 at NRG Stadium. Houston last hosted the UIL Football Championship Games for the largest conference in 2008 at what was then known as Reliant Stadium.

The Beaumont Police Department confirmed Jan. 20 that an arrest was made in the Jan. 6 homicide of 27-year-old Derek Allen Phillips of Beaumont, who was reportedly discovered dead by his roommate at their shared residence in the 1300 block of Central Drive in Beaumont, near where West Lucas intersects with Gladys Avenue.

Harris County Judge Ed Emmett announced a proposal Tuesday, Aug. 26 to convert The Astrodome, the nearly 50-year-old structure once referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” into the world’s largest indoor park and recreation center. Emmett claimed the plan would offer a year-round venue for exercise, education, family gatherings and community events.
