According to the Port Arthur Police Department, just after midnight on Dec. 6, officers responded to the 2400 block of Julian Dr. in reference to an assault. Upon arrival officers discovered a black female had been shot several times in the upper torso.

A 40-year-old Houston man has been convicted of drug trafficking and money laundering violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney Joseph D. Brown Dec. 4.

John D. Leontaritis, owner and operator of Vanderhall Exotics of Houston, and former owner operator of Global Motorcars of Houston, car dealerships that specialize in exotic, luxury automobiles, was found guilty by a jury Dec. 4 following a six-day trial before U.S. District Judge Marcia A. Crone.

Police in Port Arthur are investigating a fatality crash that claimed the life of a 78-year-old Houston man Sept. 11, reports the Port Arthur Police Department (PAPD).

According to a news release from PAPD, officers responded to a major traffic accident in the 3500 block of S. MLK shortly after 9 p.m. Upon arrival to the location, officers discovered an apparently deceased male lying in the middle of the roadway.

A second multiple vehicle crash occurred on Interstate 10 in Jefferson County near Gator Country Tuesday, Aug. 21.

According to a press release by the Department of Public Safety, initial reports indicate that a commercial motor vehicle was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 followed by a 2009 Suzuki passenger vehicle.  The driver of the Suzuki rear-ended the 18-wheeler.  After the impact, the Suzuki was engulfed in flames.

Westbound lanes of I-10 going out of Beaumont toward Houston are closed near Gator Country due to an accident. Troopers are en route to the scene, and injnuries have been reported. 

According to Texas Department of Safety Sgt. Stephanie Davis, dispatch received a report of a multiple-vehicle crash at approximately 11 a.m. Aug. 21.

In 2015, the Houston Zoo removed plastic bags in the gift shops to protect animals in the wild. In 2017, the zoo-based conservation organization eliminated single-use plastic water bottles. As of March of 2018, the zoo has taken its third step in plastic reduction, removing single-use plastic straws from all concession stands on zoo grounds.

A 56-year-old Houston man has pleaded guilty to federal drug trafficking violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney Joseph D. Brown June 22.

Eugenio Cerda pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and conspiracy to money launder on June 21 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Giblin.

A 75-year-old man who pleaded guilty to defrauding more than 500 people during his time as a fugitive from justice was sentenced May 4 to 40 years in prison for wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, the statutory maximum and his second federal sentence related to some of the scammer's incessant schemes. Harris Dempsey aka “Butch” Ballow, formerly of formerly of Galveston County, pleaded guilty to the crimes Feb.

34-year-old Western lowland gorilla Zuri

The Houston Zoo is mourning the loss of 34-year-old Western lowland gorilla, Zuri. The elderly gorilla was under treatment for severe gastrointestinal disease for the past few months, and after a full assessment of his quality of life, and the worsening of his disease despite treatment, the gorilla team and the veterinarians made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize the nearly 400-pound ape, the zoo announced April 21.
