Police say an autopsy report recently released revealed that an inmate found dead in a cell at the Jasper City Jail on Jan. 30 died of a drug overdose.

According to a news release from the Jasper Police Department (JPD), a coroner deemed the death accidental and the autopsy report from the Jefferson County medical examiner’s office indicates 28-year-old Steven Mitchell Qualls’ died as the result of methamphetamine/amphetamine toxicity.

An immate at the Jefferson County Jail died in custody, reports Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Captain Crystal Holmes, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine what caused the 70-year-old man's death. 

In a news release, Capt. Holmes indicated that an inmate in the medical infirmary reported that his bunk mate was unresponsive at about 6:30 a.m. June 4. Jail staff immediately began CPR and notified EMS. They continued CPR until EMS arrived and took over. The inmate was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

A 38-year-old federal inmate has been sentenced for assaulting a prison guard in the Eastern District of Texas, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston March 28.

Montreal Delaney, of New Orleans, pleaded guilty on June 1, 2016, to assaulting a federal officer and was subsequently sentenced to 33 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Ron Clark.

“The death is on our hands,” Orange County Judge Brint Carlton said.

Carlton was speaking about the death of inmate Robert Montano, who was held in the county jail “observation bubble” on suspicion of bath salts intoxication for four days in 2011 until he died of renal failure. Carlton confirmed that no evidence has even been produced to show that Montano was ever under the influence of any intoxicant, but he was instead a diagnosed mental health patient without prescribed medication.

The United States Court of Appeals Fifth Circuit has upheld a jury decision that awarded $2.5 million in damages against Orange County for the wrongful death of an inmate held in the county jail’s detention “bubble” for days on end as the mentally ill man died of renal failure in a pool of uneaten jail food and human waste.
