Families with special needs children are often posed with great challenges. For some families, those challenges often involve preparing for the unexpected. What if a hurricane comes to Beaumont again? How will I pay for medications? Where do I go when a teacher mistreats my child? Who will take care of my child when I’m gone?

Thursday, April 24, the Jefferson County Young Lawyers Association will host a legal workshop for parents of autistic and special needs children. The workshop at The Shorkey Center, 855 S. Eighth St., from 6-8 p.m. is open to the public, and free babysitting services will be provided. The event is sponsored by a grant from the Jefferson County Bar Association Foundation. Local parents, educators and attorneys are welcome to attend free of charge.

The Jefferson County Bar Association (JCBA) will host a free legal advice clinic for area veterans Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, from 8:30 a.m. – noon at Lumberton Fire & EMS, 228 Country Lane Drive, Lumberton. Appointments are encouraged by calling the bar office at (409) 835-8647, but walk-ins will be welcome.

The Jefferson County Bar Association (JCBA) celebrated its fourth annual National Celebrate Pro Bono Week, the week of Oct. 22-Oct. 26, on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Event Centre at 700 Crockett St. in downtown Beaumont. The celebration honored attorneys who provide civil legal services without fees to low-income residents who cannot afford to hire lawyers.
