Jefferson County Courthouse in downtown Beaumont was in the process of being evacuated Tuesday morning, May 29, at 9:30 a.m. due to a phoned-in bomb threat, according to employees of the state offices housed in the building. 

 

UPDATE: Doors to the Jefferson County Courthouse were open at 11 a.m., following an early-morning evacuation ordered when a phone caller dialed 9-1-1 to tell police a bomb was in the building.

After ultimately heading the state’s investigation into four current and former officers of the Jefferson County Courthouse, special prosecutor/attorney pro tem Josh Schaffer is attempting to collect his fees. However, County Commissioners are refusing to pay the bill – with an attorney for the elected officials citing case law as to why the county has already overpaid for the work that’s been performed.

The Jefferson County Courthouse, along with other government buildings, was evacuated Aug. 7 for the second time in about two months due to erroneous bomb threats at the building, reports the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

UPDATE: Capt. Crystal Holmes of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office gave the "all clear" at 12:44 p.m., signaling that the courthouse has reopened as no explosive devices were discovered following the bomb threat earlier today. 

Holmes reported that the investigation into the threat would be conducted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the ATF and the FBI.

Seven protestors gathered outside the Jefferson County Courthouse on Thursday, Sept. 29, to demand justice, stating that they have been cheated by Quanell X, a Houston community activist.

The press conference began with a prayer circle led by Beaumont activist Ricky Jason, once a colleague of Quanell X.

ExxonMobil Beaumont Refinery experienced an unplanned shutdown of one of its sulfur units Wednesday morning around 11 a.m., Feb. 10, and as a precautionary measure enacted a shelter-in-place order within the complex.

A similar move was made at nearby Jefferson County Courthouse, according to Greg Fountain, Emergency Management coordinator for Jefferson County.

The Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, better known as CLEAT, came to Beaumont on Monday, July 12, for a demonstration in front of the Jefferson County Courthouse to demand justice for the widow and family of Martin “Popeye” Holmes, who passed away Sept. 19, 2013 at the age of 81.
