Southeast Texans should be on the alert for missing mail. 

Mail theft associated with one or more counterfeit check-cashing rings is on the rise in the area, according to officers from three local law enforcement entities. The thieves are apparently rifling through people’s mail, stealing checks, banking information and, ultimately, identities.

Some schools call it “Project Graduation,” and at least one local school calls it “Project Celebration.” Whatever they may call it, public schools in Jefferson County are all preparing graduation-night festivities for student seniors, meant to reward long years of hard work and to keep the students safe on a night fraught with peril.

Jan. 12, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Association (JCSA) donated $1,000 to each of several high schools for their graduation night events.

Jefferson County Commissioners and County Judge Jeff Branick issued a proclamation declaring the week of Jan. 22-28 to be School Choice Week because, according to the supporting document declaring the special designation, “all children in Jefferson County should have access to the highest-quality education possible.” 

The elected leaders believe the topic needs to be discussed in an effort to “raise awareness of the need for effective educational options.”

Allison Nathan Getz, tax assessor-collector for Jefferson County, announced Jan. 17 that the county telephone systems will be upgraded beginning Tuesday, Jan. 17, and continue through Monday, Jan 30. Intermittent phone service outages during business hours may occur but should be kept to a minimum.

Jefferson County commissioners and County Judge Jeff Branick are hoping to shave some utility costs off the budget by making energy efficient changes to county buildings where possible. The largest, and least intrusive, means of energy cost-savings, commissioners agree, will come in the form of upgrading light bulbs in many of the county’s facilities to LED (light emitting diodes) over traditional fluorescent bulbs.
