UPDATE: State District Judge Larry Gist of the Drug Impact Court of Jefferson County accepted a jury verdict of guilty Friday, May 12, 2017, and sentenced Byron E. Bush, 37, to 40 years in prison, announced Criminal District Attorney Bob Wortham.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Marcus McLellan reports deputies in the department are investigating an apparent self-inflicted shooting that occurred May 4.

According to McLellan, JCSO responded to a call of a self-inflicted gunshot at 3410 North Twin City Hwy. in Nederland. Upon arrival, deputies found a male subject on the floor of the residence with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound. The male subject was transported by Acadian EMS to St. Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont where he remains in critical condition.

Deputies arrested a Port Arthur man for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle on May 2 after reportedly stopping him in a Land Rover stolen from Nederland earlier the same day.

Former Beaumont ISD electrical contractor Calvin Walker will be required to face state prosecution alleging he defrauded the school district and the city of Port Arthur, according to a ruling by the United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS), as the court’s justices this week refused to entertain pleadings by Walker and his legal counsel that the cases pending against the defendant should be quashed before ever being heard by a jury of his peers. Walker is set to appear before Jefferson County Criminal District Court Judge John Stevens on June 5.

Habitat’s National Women Build Week invites women to help make a difference and devote at least one day to help build decent and affordable housing in their local communities.

Arron Cotton

Held in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail for a little over three years, accused armed robber and capital murderer Aaron Cotton has been all but relieved of the charges that have been pending against him since 2013.

Cotton was arrested in February 2014 and charged with capital murder in the August 2013 shooting death of Kendra Crump at the Knight’s Inn motel in Beaumont, as well as the aggravated robbery of her alleged backpage.com pimp, Jeremy Spears.
