As 2016 comes to a close, Jefferson County has yet to ink a deal with a new management firm to oversee the Ford Park Entertainment Complex. After months of negotiation, a contract to secure the services of a management firm for the publicly subsidized entertainment complex is held up as lawyers review the proposition on the table, according to county purchasing agent Deborah Clark.

Under the tenure of SMG, Ford Park has run at a nearly $2 million annual deficit – a deficit charged to taxpayers of Jefferson County.

A toxic national trend of pharmaceutical drug abuse is leaving a wide swath of death in its wake, and Southeast Texas is no exception, according to authorities.

“Oh, it’s here,” Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office investigator Marcelo Molfino told The Examiner. “Interstate 10 is a pipeline for drugs.”

On Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 8:55 a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety received a report of a one vehicle crash on East Hamshire Road in Jefferson County.

Preliminary reports indicate that a 2001 Ford pickup truck was traveling eastbound on East Hamshire Road when the driver suffered a heart attack and drove off the roadway. The vehicle continued off the road and struck a utility pole.

A truck drove into a canal on Turner Road in Jefferson County on Wednesday, Dec. 7 around 8:15 p.m., DPS PIO Stephanie Davis said in a release.

The "1997 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling southbound on Turner Road" when the driver left the roadway, Davis said, but "the occupants were able to safely get out of the submerged vehicle."

An emotional Sheriff Mitch Woods bade a fond farewell to staff, fellow peace officers and friends of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office during a retirement celebration for the longtime lawman on Dec. 2. Woods is saying goodbye after 42 years of service to the Southeast Texas community.

Allison Nathan Getz, Tax Assessor-Collector for Jefferson County, announced Dec. 1 that the tax office in Mid-County will be closed on Thursday, Dec. 22, in order to install new registration and title system (RTS) workstation and printers. The Beaumont and Port Arthur Sub-Courthouse Tax Office locations will remain open that day.

The first of this November’s newly elected officials will be installed this coming week as Judge Terrence Holmes is set to be confirmed by the County Commissioners Court on Monday, Dec. 5, to finish out the unexpired term of office in Jefferson County Court at Law No. 2. 

Judges in Jefferson County normally serve four-year terms, but Holmes is set to serve through December 2018.

The seat was vacated by the passing of longtime Judge Lupe Flores early in 2015, and has been under the leadership of Judge Cory Crenshaw in the interim.

Ivory P, 36, a Beaumont rapper and a signee of the late Pimp C’s UGK label, was shot and killed during an armed confrontation with law enforcement officers following a high-speed car chase Nov. 22, reports the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO). After the shooting, the Beaumont Police Department released information implicating Ivory P, whose real name is Ivory C.
