On Thursday, Sept. 8, at approximately 11:20 p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety received a reported of a motor vehicle crash on I-10 near Smith Road in Jefferson County.  The crash involved one vehicle which was a truck tractor semi-trailer.

A Jefferson County jury has sentenced 26-year-old Jamail Wallace to 20 years in prison for the 2014 armed robbery of Beaumont’s AT&T store on Dowlen Road. According to prosecutor Luke Nichols, the trial began the week of Aug. 22 and concluded Monday, Aug. 29, with a guilty verdict and 20-year prison sentence handed down by a jury.

Jefferson County Commissioners have tentatively committed to approving a budget for the coming fiscal year that will not raise the tax burden placed on property owners, but in order to do so, the elected leaders have to figure out how to balance a budget with more funding requests and less income.

According to Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick, who heads the Commissioners Court, the county has been hard hit by lowered gas prices.

If Jefferson County departments budget requests are fully funded this year, according to County Auditor Patrick Swain, the county is looking at a $4 million shortfall. Among the requests for increased funding are various capital improvement projects throughout the county, increases to cover healthcare premiums, and more than a half-million dollars in requested additions for the SMG-managed and county-owned Ford Park Entertainment Complex, which already loses more than $2 million annually.
