Lamar University graduate and former Port Neches-Groves High School standout Chris Stroud earned his first career victory on the PGA Tour over the weekend as he captured the Barracuda Championship.

Stroud, a two-time All-American and four-time Southland Conference champion during his time at Lamar, won a three-way playoff with Greg Owen and Richy Werenski to claim the title.

“Eleven years I’ve waited for that,” Stroud said when he was introduced as the champion. “It’s a dream come true.”

Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School has announced its school board members for the 2017-2018 school year. Mark Phelan will serve as School Board chair. New members include Jeremy Saba and Jackie Simien. Returning members are Francis Coker, Father Rodell Faller, Lee Ann Fuselier, Theresa Herink, Gillian Jenkins, Camille Mouton, Mandy Oliverio, Patrick Swain and Russ Waddill. Legendary football coach and current defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams Wade Phillips will sign copies of his newly released book titled “Son of Bum: Lessons My Dad Taught Me About Football and Life” on Friday, May 5.

His first stop will be at 2 p.m. at the Museum of the Gulf Coast (700 Procter St.) in Port Arthur, and Phillips will sign copies in Beaumont at 7 p.m. at Barnes & Noble (4155 Dowlen Road).


St. Anthony Cathedral School broke ground on a new technology center Thursday, Dec. 8, near the school playground.

“The new technology facility is being built with a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Bob Rozas, longtime supporters of St. Anthony’s school, located in the heart of downtown Beaumont,” said Geneva Dixon-Peters, director of development for the school, in a release.

Professional Fire Fighters Local No. 399 will host their first Hooks & Ladder Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 4, beginning at sunrise with a launch at Pine Tree Lodge at 3296 Pinetree Road in Beaumont (Labelle area).


Community Christian School

The varsity cross country team at Community Christian School in Orange recently competed at the TAPPS 2A state championship in Waco on Oct. 31.


Kelly's Academic Challenge Team competed in the quarterfinals of the Channel 6 Challenge on February 21 at the KFDM Studios. The team of Brent Johnston, Gio Medina, and Hayden Raps took the lead in the first round and went on to defeat East Chambers High School 270 to 165. The match will be aired on KFDM Channel 6 on May 3 at 12:00 p.m.

The Jefferson County Young Lawyer’s Association hosted the 36th annual Texas High School Mock Trial Competition on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Jefferson County Courthouse. After two rounds, the top two teams competed in a final trial to see who would be going to state.
