When Cardinal football was reintroduced in 2010, there was an excitement on campus that hadn’t been felt in a long time. It was a welcome return following two decades without a sport that Southeast Texans eat, sleep and breathe. Now that Big Red pride is back in full force, Lamar University reintroduces another tradition dating back more than half a century — the Homecoming Parade.

Lamar assistant coach Craig McGallion has been named defensive coordinator announced head coach Ray Woodard Friday morning. McGallion takes over for Bill Bradley who retired after spending the previous two seasons as the Cardinals defensive coordinator.

With an increased awareness of the dangers concussions pose to football players from the NFL down to Pee Wee football, the NCAA now requires all Division I member institutions to have a concussion management plan in place for its student athletes to employ policies to reduce and treat occurrences of brain injury.

Lamar University head athletic trainer Josh Yonker said he is committed to doing everything he can to keep his athletes safe after a suspected concussion.

It’s been another tough season for the Lamar Cardinal football program. After a 56-7 home loss to Sam Houston State last weekend, leading rusher Herschel Sims told head coach Ray Woodard he was leaving the team and would transfer at the end of the semester.
