Both Lamar University basketball programs were picked to finish at the top of the Southland Conference standings. And if early progress is any indication, the Cardinals could be looking at two conference titles.

The men’s team is now 5-1 after a 66-52 win over UTEP in El Paso on Nov. 27. The Cards, who got double-doubles from senior Zjori Bosha and junior Josh Nzeakor, jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back. The victory equals the best start for the Cardinals since the 2008-09 season.

It was a storyline that Lamar University fans have seen numerous times throughout the season – early double-digit deficits and a late surge that comes up just short in the end. That script was followed, down to the very last detail Feb. 29, to an even more heartbreaking end than in any of the previous contests, if that’s even possible.
