Both Lamar University basketball programs were picked to finish at the top of the Southland Conference standings. And if early progress is any indication, the Cardinals could be looking at two conference titles.

The men’s team is now 5-1 after a 66-52 win over UTEP in El Paso on Nov. 27. The Cards, who got double-doubles from senior Zjori Bosha and junior Josh Nzeakor, jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back. The victory equals the best start for the Cardinals since the 2008-09 season.

After winning their first regular season Southland Conference title, the Cardinal women’s soccer program grinded its way through the conference tournament and won it. LU defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-0), Central Arkansas (2-1) and SFA (2-0) to advance to the NCAA Tournament after finishing a dismal 2-14-3 last year.

Playing in front of their biggest home crowd ever, the Lamar Cardinals came up with their biggest win ever, a 4-1 drubbing of archrival McNeese on Oct. 27, to claim the Southland Conference regular-season championship for the first time in the 11-year history of the LU women’s soccer program.

“What an amazing night,” said head coach Steve Holeman. “We came out and played an amazing game. These girls worked hard all season, and it really paid off tonight.”

Four Cardinals, including 16th rounder Carson Lance, were picked to continue their baseball careers, hearing their respective names called by Major League clubs as they were selected in the MLB Amateur Draft on June 14.

There’s been a whirlwind of changes since Mike Schultz arrived as the new head football coach earlier this year and a major point of emphasis under Schultz is that players get stronger by spending more time in the weight room.

With that said, Schultz and the coaching staff hosted a first for the Lamar football team — Night of Champions — on April 25, which is a strength and conditioning showcase that saw several members of the team square off in bench press, squats and deadlift at Provost Umphrey Stadium in front of fans.
