Lamar University has created a new office of sustainability with the goal of making the university as efficient and environmentally friendly as possible. Steve Doblin, provost and vice president of academic affairs, named Jim Armacost, assistant professor of biology, the university’s first director of sustainability.

Pulse, Lamar University’s student-created literary magazine, has released its 60th edition. Sponsored by the Department of English and Modern Languages, the magazine contains poetry and prose by students from a variety of disciplines on campus. The magazine is funded by donations from patrons of the arts.

R.S. “Sam” Gwynn, professor of English and modern languages, said Pulse is an essential nurturing ground for young writers.

The Lamar University department of history will host the fourth annual Regional History Day competition on Thursday, Feb. 14, attracting students from high schools and middle schools across Southeast Texas.

Lamar University Office of Student Engagement has taken over parents programming with plans to increase parent involvement. The goal of parents programming is to get parents involved at LU and keep them up to date with news, events, deadlines and other important information on campus.

Jay Lambert, assistant vice president of student engagement, said he hopes to provide parents opportunities to become more engaged with Lamar and their students’ experiences.

Kumer Das

The Mathematical Association of America has chosen Kumer Das, associate professor of mathematics at Lamar University, to receive its Alder Award for 2013. A beginning college or university mathematics faculty member is given the award each year for distinguished teaching, and no more than three are awarded per year throughout the United States and Canada.

Das will receive the award at the Math Fest Ceremony in Hartford, Conn., on Aug. 2.

Lamar University is doing its part to aid Southeast Texans who wish to claim their Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) by offering free tax return preparation assistance and free electronic filing (e-filing) to taxpayers through its LU Community Outreach Program.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Lamar University’s online graduate nursing program as second in the nation out of 101 programs evaluated.

The ranking is based on four criteria: faculty credentials and training, student services and technology, student engagement, and admissions selectivity

“We are very proud of our well prepared faculty,” said Nancy Blume, director of graduate nursing studies at Lamar. “They are the backbone of our successful program.”

As the academic processionals march through the Montagne Center for Lamar University’s commencement ceremonies this Saturday, Dec. 15,they will follow a university mace that received a recent facelift thanks to the work of a Lamar alumnus.
