Lamar University and the Beaumont Foundation of America have announced the 15th in a series of Southeast Texas Legends Scholarships, this one honoring Walter Umphrey, founding partner of Provost Umphrey Law Firm. The $100,000 endowed scholarship will assist underserved Lamar University students, said Lamar President James Simmons.

Despite opening the Southland Conference 0-2, the Lamar Cardinals look to get back on track when they host McMurry University for Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. at Provost Umphrey Stadium in non-conference action.

Because of widespread interest, Lamar University’s presentation of “An Evening with Thomas Jefferson on the American Presidency” will move to the University Theatre on Tuesday, Oct. 16. The program will feature historical scholar Bill Barker, acclaimed as the nation’s best Jefferson interpreter.

State Senator Robert Nichols

Keynote speaker will be state Sen. Robert Nichols 

Lamar University is scheduled to confer 577 degrees at summer commencement Saturday, Aug. 18, in the Montagne Center. District 3 State Senator Robert Nichols, R-Jacksonville, will be the keynote speaker. Nichols is a 1968 graduate of LU.

Hill

Lamar University fresh­man Brandon Jamal Hill, 20, died unexpectedly after being taken by ambulance to an area hospital after becoming ill on Feb. 3, university offi­cials said.

Hill was a resident of Mis­souri City and lived in Monroe Hall on the campus.

The only mention of the death was on the Lamar Universi­ty website through a statement by LU President Ken Evans.
