After a powerful outburst that tied a school record, junior outfielder Reid Russell was invited to participate in the 2016 TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby, which will be Sunday, July 3, and shown live on ESPN2 at 7:30 p.m.


Lamar University’s Brynn Baca, a first-team selection on the All-Southland Conference Softball team, was named to the 2016 USA Baseball Women’s National Team Trials roster, following the second annual Women’s National Open held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex from June 10-12 in Cary, North Carolina.

At its May 26 meeting, the 10-member Texas State University System Board of Regents approved the official concealed handgun policy for Lamar University students, employees and visitors that will go into effect Aug. 1.

The policy, created to comply with Senate Bill 11 and now posted online, pertains to individuals licensed to carry a handgun under Texas law. The policy addresses concealed carry of handguns only. Open carry of handguns remains unlawful on the LU campus or premises.

The Lamar baseball Cardinals had all the momentum in the world heading into the Southland Conference Tournament last week in Sugar Land with a 33-19 record, yet the Cards faltered and were eliminated in two games, losing to Central Arkansas 3-0 and Stephen F. Austin 5-2. 

Lamar had swept SFA in a three-game series the week before the tournament, outscoring the Lumberjacks 35-15.

The tournament elimination marked the end of a historic career for Lamar coach Jim Gilligan.


The context of my visit with the Lamar pre-professional students included my discussion of the OSR and the AAMC. My relationship with the founding dean of the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio is part of that context.

Newly crowned Southland Conference Hitter of the Year Reid Russell joined six other Cardinals from the Lamar University baseball team who were voted onto all-league teams by head coaches and sports information directors.

Senior Taylor Stockton was named SLC Student-Athlete of the Year.

Senior Taylor Stockton was named the Southland Conference’s Student-Athlete of the Year for women’s golf. Stockton, a Clear Lake native, becomes the fifth LU women’s golfer to be named student-athlete of the year, joining Casey Cain (2004, 2005), Therese Nilsson (2009), Stine Pederson (2011) and Kelly Erasmus (2015).

May 13-15 will be designated as Jim Gilligan Days.

Heading into his final weekend as a head coach in the dugout at Vincent-Beck Stadium, the city of Beaumont made a proclamation May 10 stating that May 13-15 will be designated as Jim Gilligan Days around the town for the years of service he has provided Lamar University and the entire community.

“It was very, very nice of Mayor (Becky Ames) and the City Council to present this to me. Tell everybody they have off for the next three days,” said Gilligan with a grin.

Two former Lamar Cardinals are getting their shot to continue their playing careers at the next level. Shortly after the conclusion of the NFL draft, offensive lineman Cody Elenz and receiver Reggie Begelton each received a phone call from the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.
