The Little Cypress-Mauriceville (LCM) High School campus has been closed to teachers and staff on Monday, March 19, following an electrical fire on the campus, reports the school district. 

According to the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Consolidated Independent School District (LCMCISD), a small fire on the exterior of the school broke out Sunday evening causing the closure. All other campuses in the district remain open, and high school students enrolled at Lamar State College-Orange (LSC-O) will still have class. 


What started out as innocent teenage mischief ended in tragedy Jan. 21 with the death of a 14-year-old girl, Madalyn Gracie Griffin, known as Gracie to family and friends. 


UPDATE, Nov. 30, 8 p.m.: Heaven Cox has been found. The Orange County Sheriff's Office reports she was in Louisiana at the home of a relative of an acquaintance. Detectives are still investigating the incident.

An Orange County mother is searching for her runaway daughter, 15-year-old Heaven Ray Cox of Mauriceville, reports the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO).


Silsbee senior Kalon Barnes has been declared the fastest athlete this season by the University of Interscholastic League as he won three medals (two gold) while setting a new Class 4A in the 100-meters May 13 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin.

His winning time of 10.22 eclipsed the old 4A record of 10.26 set in 2002 by DaBryan Blanton of Forney High School.

Later that day, Barnes earned his second gold medal by winning the 200-meters in 21.48.

West Orange-Stark senior football player Steven Tims will continue his education and play football for Blinn College in Brenham. Tims was named the Class 4A state championship game defensive MVP.

Police in Orange are investigating a homicide in the city after discovering a local man deceased alongside the roadway, the Orange Police Department reports.

According to Capt. Robert Enmon, officers responded to the 600 block of North Street at 2:30 a.m. on March 24 in reference to a disturbance. When they arrived, they found 38-year-old Orange resident Shane Austin Cooper unresponsive lying next to the road.


Deputies with the Orange County Sheriff's Office arrested a Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School student for possession weapons on campus late Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 13, Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD Community Relations Coordinator Sherry Combs revealed in a news release. The student was also reportedly in possession of alcohol.

The expansion of a playground designed for special needs students at Little Cypress Intermediate recently got a $600 boost from the Kiwanis Club of Orange, Texas.

The Stay and Play Recreational Area, a fully inclusive playground, is currently a 40x40 foot area for both safety and comfort of special needs students. The expansion will add an additional 16 feet of play area and will allow for a raised grass pad level with a rubberized cushioned surface, creating a smooth transition for wheelchairs and walkers.
