Sept. 23, 2017, I wrote CVS CEO Larry Merlo, expressing my concerns about CVS’ use of its Pharmacy Management Benefits (PBM) program to further intrude into healthcare. The letter also summarized SETMA’s extensive clinical tools for supporting the appropriate and safe prescribing of opioid medications including the electronic prescribing of controlled substances.

Sept. 28, 2017, I received a response from CVS Health’s Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. Here is that response and my observations.

Bad things can happen in deep space. We know this because films like “Alien” and the many other sci-fi horror films it inspired have engineered all kinds of extraterrestrial creatures to prey on mankind. “Life” succeeds better than about 90 percent of those due to its relentless claustrophobia and a twist ending that director Daniel Espinosa insisted on before he agreed to make the movie.

Life sometimes hits us with surprise after surprise. This seems especially true the older we become. I go to way too many funerals these days, and seldom a week goes by that I don’t get a call letting me know of the death of a friend or a relative. I said to someone at the funeral home last night, “We really have to quit meeting like this.” My friend laughed as we remembered the last occasion where we visited together.
