The City of Beaumont is beginning a program that could provide free spay and neuter surgeries to pets of eligible Beaumont residents through the city’s Animal Care Division, Animal Care Manager Matthew Fortenberry reports.

Beaumont Animal Services wants the Southeast Texas community to foster lonely shelter pets for the holidays. For the seventh year in a row, Beaumont Animal Services is participating in the national “Foster a Lonely Pet for the Holidays” pet fostering program. This year's program will run from Dec. 2 through Jan. 3. All adoption fees will be discounted 50% during this program. Across the country, over 13,000 pet rescue organizations are trying to empty their kennels for Christmas, encouraging members of the public to invite a pet home for the holidays.

Estimates from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) indicate that 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats are owned in the United States. Approximately 37-47 percent of all households in the United States have a dog, and 30-37 percent have a cat.
