Mayor Becky Ames welcomed the Queen of the 69th Neches River Festival Rebecca Wied and the court of Bailey Heartfield (Third Lady in Waiting), Callie Roane (First Lady in Waiting) and Elizabeth Figueiras (Second Lady in Waiting) to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital on April 11. The Court presented St. Elizabeth a throne-themed book nook full of books for the children’s ward. The books were collected as a service project by the princesses and their escort who participated in the recent Neches River Festival activities.

The main library in downtown Beaumont on Pearl Street reopened March 28 after the City Council meeting dismissed.

Dora Nisby, chairman of the Beaumont Library Commission and director of the Friends of the Library, thanked City Manager Kyle Hayes, Mayor Becky Ames, the City Council and Library Administrator Paul Eddy during the ribbon cutting ceremony.

“It means that Beaumont is on the move. Several years ago, we started on a journey to decide what to do about the main library,” Nisby said.

The public is invited to attend Duty Calls: Honoring Our First Responders at the Julie Rogers Theatre on Tuesday, March 21, at 6 p.m. This event will recognize first responders from Beaumont Police and Fires Departments, and Beaumont EMS. 

The committee, which includes Anna J. Brian, Carol Gary, Elaine Henderson, Barbara Marshall, Barbara Otto, and Robin Troy have joined forces with Mayor Becky Ames and the City of Beaumont to help show support to first responders and provide each one of them a copy of the devotional book, Strength for Service to God and Community.

Although Beaumont City Clerk Tina Broussard was required to remove mayoral candidate Hani Tohme from the municipality’s elections ballot due to concerns over voter registration, incumbent Mayor Becky Ames drew competition for the elected post from Jude Paredez and Christopher Jones.

It was Nov. 27, 2016, and Meatra Gilmore needed gas. She stopped at a local station to fuel up and walked inside to go the restroom. After asking the attendant where the customer bathroom was located, she suddenly collapsed. Gilmore had experienced a heart attack. By the time the paramedics arrived, she wasn’t breathing.

In another recent attack against law enforcement officers, an assailant carrying an assault rifle and a pistol, with a backup assault rifle reportedly hidden in his car, shot and killed three police officers and wounded three others in Baton Rouge on July 17 before he was taken down.

More than 430 Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School students, 100 faculty members and 40 parents volunteered helping hands to more than 35 local charities and nonprofit organizations during Kelly Springs Into Action Day on Friday, April 15.

Kelly High School, established in 1895, is a diocesan, coeducational high school in Beaumont that, according to its mission statement, offers “cultural diversity, spiritual and personal development, and a strong college preparation in a loving and nurturing environment.”

March 2016 is almost behind us as we look forward to April showers and May flowers, but Women’s History Month will not only be remembered for the advent of spring, but also for hosting the first glimpse of Southeast Texas’ Women Who Mean Business.
