When Jake Rowley began showing up to Nederland High School his freshman year dressed in pink and black outfits and white buck shoes, he said he received a variety of reactions from his peers.

“I looked like somebody straight out of the ’50s, and that kind of intrigued them to either make fun of me or try to get to know me,” Rowley said.

Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Nederland High School, stu­dents were presented with a preview of what to expect if they make the wrong decision and choose to drink and drive.

As the clouds masked the sun on a gloomy Saturday morning, Southeast Texans attempted to shine some light on a dark and somber mood by displaying their American flags as a sign of respect and support for Sgt. Anthony Maddox and his family at the Port Arthur soldier’s funeral at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Beaumont.

Maddox, 22, of Port Arthur, was killed Monday, July 22, in a work-related fuel explosion in Afghanistan that left him burned over 97 percent of his body.
