Harbor Hospice held a ribbon cutting Friday, May 5, to celebrate the opening of a new location at 2200 Highway 365, Suite 101, in Nederland.

Harbor Hospice Administrator Brenna Rodriguez said the location has actually been in operation since October 2016.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Marcus McLellan reports deputies in the department are investigating an apparent self-inflicted shooting that occurred May 4.

According to McLellan, JCSO responded to a call of a self-inflicted gunshot at 3410 North Twin City Hwy. in Nederland. Upon arrival, deputies found a male subject on the floor of the residence with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound. The male subject was transported by Acadian EMS to St. Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont where he remains in critical condition.

Deputies arrested a Port Arthur man for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle on May 2 after reportedly stopping him in a Land Rover stolen from Nederland earlier the same day.

For a pastor in Mid-County, the problem was plain to see, right there on the other side of his fence.

“I live right here on this back road, and so I see homeless people all the time pushing their carts back there, checking these dumpsters,” said Albert Clavijo, youth pastor at Triumph Church.

Homeless people wander behind the Plaza shopping center off Highway 365 and US 69 regularly, searching for food, Clavijo said. And the need is great in Mid-County.

Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School’s Team Force came ready to play March 8, as they held their annual basketball game against the Nederland Dynamo Dogs, LCM CISD Community Relations Specialist Sherry Combs said in a release. 

Having lost the last three years, the team was determined to bring home the trophy, and that they did with a 28 to 20 victory against the Dogs. Fellow classmates cheered the team on and the encouragement, determination and coaching from some of the varsity basketball team, carried the day. Dr. Jim Armstrong officiated the game.
