Police in Orange arrested two people for public intoxication over the weekend after reports of a disturbance led them to an allegedly drunk man and a woman who officers say admitted to using “dip,” a street name for PCP (phencyclidine).

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying and locating the vehicle involved in a fatal auto-pedestrian accident that claimed the life of an Orange resident Friday, Oct. 9.

In a news release, DPS Trooper Stephanie Davis reports 41-year-old Chad Eugene Shields of Orange was struck and killed by an unknown vehicle near mile marker 877 on eastbound Interstate 10 in Orange at about 12:40 a.m. Friday morning.

State Rep. Dade Phelan of House District 21, which includes all of Orange County and part of Jefferson County, addressed the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce on Sept. 22, to say that he is taking measures to bring more business – and more bass fishing – to Southeast Texas with House Bill 1979.

Local foster children had some summer fun recently thanks to a donation from the Kiwanis Club of Orange. The group donated $550 to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for a summer celebration that included waterslides, a bounce house, and food. Kiwanians were also on hand to help cook hot dogs and links and serve refreshments.

Though a handful of roof tarps and downed trees linger, the community appears largely healed.
