Police have arrested a suspect in the Nov. 10 attempted robbery of Third Coast Bank on Dowlen Road in Beaumont. Beaumont resident James Richard Newton, 46, was taken into custody Nov. 12 at the Best Western Casino in Vinton, Louisiana after deputies located his vehicle in the parking lot of the casino.

Update: The West Orange-Stark High School coach reportedly driving the vehicle that claimed the lives of 25-year-old Ava Lewis and six-year-old daughter Lamya Newhouse, Carl Broussard, 53, of Vinton, resigned from his position at the school, reports WO-S representatives. The district accepted his resignation.

Body camera used by Lamar police

The Lamar University Police Department (LUPD) is expanding its use of body-worn cameras. Cameras are already in use across campus, according to a Lamar press release, from the campus security camera system to cameras in each LUPD patrol unit.

The Beaumont Police Department and Beaumont Animal Services are teaming up with Crime Stoppers to combat animal abuse and neglect.

The reorganization and enhancement of Animal Services, with Crime Stoppers on board, will give citizens a better resource for reporting animal cruelty and abuse anonymously. A unit is being assigned to caring and adopting out animals, while another will be strictly tasked with addressing animal abuse complaints, with a detective designated specifically to investigating these crimes.

Police in Beaumont recovered a live grenade from the GI Surplus store in the 5700 block of College Street on Sept. 14 when a man asked about the explosive item at the store after finding it while cleaning out his uncle's apartment, according the Beaumont Police Department.

Beaumont police have made an arrest in the murder of a woman in an Old Town apartment.

Police were dispatched to the 2340 Angelina St. at Minor Street on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, at 9:59 a.m. Upon arrival, BPD officers found a deceased female inside apartment 102, and because of evidence found at the scene, officers investigated the scene as a homicide. Detectives were then dispatched, and questioned witnesses and one possible suspect at the Beaumont police station.
