Liberty Police made two arrests in reference to a late night assault that took place on June 30, according to a news release from the department. Police responded to the 5000 block of Briar Grove in the Ridgewood subdivision shortly after 1 a.m. in reference to an assault.

The Port Arthur Fire Department continues to maintain a 24-hour presence at the German Pellets terminal, and is ensuring every necessary action is being taken to end this incident as quickly and safely as possible, City of Port Arthur spokesperson LaRisa Carpenter said in a release June 16. The Port Arthur Fire Department has overseen approximately 4,700 tons of product removed from the debris pile to date.

Two shipping companies based in Egypt and Singapore pleaded guilty in federal court in Beaumont, Texas on June 20 to violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS) and obstruction of justice for covering up the illegal dumping of oil-contaminated bilge water and garbage from one of their ships into the sea.

A Port Arthur staple is slated for closure. The owners of Nick’s Grocery at 3149 39th St. announced it would soon shutter its doors. Nick and Dorothy Nicotre opened Nick’s Grocery on Sept. 27, 1959, and it’s still owned by the Nicotre and Plagman families.

The Gift of Life is hosting its final Men’s Health Month Screening site for the month of June in Port Arthur on Saturday, June 24 from 9 a.m. – Noon at the Carl A. Parker Multipurpose Center (1800 Lakeshore Dr.).

"We’re really excited because we’re actually bringing in a Port Arthur native and Super Bowl Champion Joe Washington, Jr. to meet and greet our clients," said Holli Peterson, spokesperson for the Gift of Life.

"Right now, we’re having several people calling and asking us if we’re cancelling our screening due to weather. At this time, we have no plans to cancel."

More than one veteran police officer was released from duty at the Port Arthur Police Department within a week’s time. Mickey Sterling and Rickey Antoine were terminated from employment on consecutive Fridays amid allegations of impropriety. Both had been on administrative leave pending a final decision to terminate or to return them to work by PAPD Chief Patrick Melvin. 

Officer Darren Johnson, placed on administrative leave at the same time as Antoine, resigned.

A silo that has been smoldering for months at German Pellets in Port Arthur collapsed in the early morning hours of June 4, city of Port Arthur spokesperson Risa Carpenter stated in a news release.
