Port Arthur mayor wins re-election

Although the turnout for Port Arthur elections wasn’t as large as 2010, which saw 4,241 total votes cast for mayor, the result was the same with the incumbent Deloris “Bobbie” Prince retaining her seat as mayor for a third straight three-year term. According to City of Port Arthur election result data, only 3,244 votes were cast for mayor in 2013 with 1,756 (54.13 percent) for Prince.

Port Arthur ordered to pay for environmental violations

The city of Port Arthur and a handful of companies operating within the municipality have entered into an agreement with the Department of Justice to pay more than $1 million in damages for their role in “releases of hazardous substances at the State Marine Superfund Site near the city of Port Arthur, Texas,” announced DOJ filings Tuesday, April 23. The announcement from the governmental entity now opens a 30-day public comment period on the allegations made by the DOJ or the resulting settlement with the alleged offenders.

Tekoa Academy students sent home early after threat is found

A crudely written message scrawled on the bathroom wall at Tekoa Academy drew a response from the Port Arthur Police Department, including evacuation of the school at 326 Thomas Blvd. in Port Arthur, but in the end it was just an early release for  Tekoa students.

Parishioner slaps Port Arthur church with lawsuit

After being expelled from her church, Jessie Mae Jackson, a lifelong member of the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Port Arthur, said she just wanted their pastor to be more transparent with the church’s finances.

“There was a lot of conflict of interest going on,” she said. “A lot of nepotism, just stuff that wasn’t right.”

One man is dead and at least three others were injured during a pair of Saturday night shootings in Port Arthur on March 30.

At about 3 a.m. Sunday morning, March 31, Port Arthur police said they responded to a gunfight between two groups of men at 901 Houston Ave. near the Old School Lounge.

Port Arthur resident receives new home with mayor’s help

Port Arthur Mayor Delores “Bobbie” Prince and city manager Floyd Johnson presented resident Thressal Lorraine Prevost with the key to her new home at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday, March 27, at 1 p.m. The event took place at Prevost’s newly built four-bedroom, two-bathroom house on 14th Street in Port Arthur.
