Port Arthur

Lamar State College - Port Arthur is closing its campus at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 9, 2015. According to Gerry Dickert, public information coordinator, there will be no classes for the remainder of the day, including night classes. This closure is due to a break in a water main in the city of Port Arthur. At this time, plans are to resume operations at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10.

On Monday, October 5, 2015, at approximately 11:35 p.m., the Port Arthur Police Department received a report of an aggravated robbery at 2015 W. Hwy 73, at a hotel known as the Three Rivers Inn and Suites.

According to a press release, the clerk told responding officers that a black male entered the business brandishing a handgun, which he used to threaten the clerk. The suspect was able to obtain an undetermined amount of cash from the register of the business. He then fled in an unknown direction. The clerk was not injured during the incident.

On Saturday, October 3, 2015, at 4:27 a.m., the Port Arthur Police Department received a report of a window being shot. Upon arrival, officers were told a woman and her boyfriend had been in a verbal altercation with a male subject, but had forced him to leave the residence. Shortly after, the couple was standing in their living room when a gun shot broke the window they were standing near.

On September 29, 2015, Port Arthur police were dispatched to 4200 Gulfway in reference to a man down. Subsequent investigation revealed the man, identified as 42 year old Port Arthur resident Michael Paul Blanchard, had been murdered.

A two-vehicle collision in Beaumont's west end on Friday, Sept. 18, 2015 resulted in the death of a Port Arthur resident.

According to a press release from the City of Beaumont, just before 11 p.m. Friday, Beaumont PD officers responded to a collision at the intersection of Major Drive and Highway 105. Upon arrival, it is reported two white Ford F-150 trucks were resting against the traffic light pole in the intersection.

UPDATED: A traffic collision at approximately 6:00 a.m. this morning on Friday, September 18, 2015 has resulted in at least one fatality. 

According to trooper Stephanie Davis, the two-vehicle crash on Highway 73 just west of FM 366 in Jefferson County occurred in the eastbound lanes of Highway 73 near the Taft Street exit.

The city of Port Arthur will offer influenza vaccinations Oct. 1 at the Bob Bowers Civic Center, 3401 Cultural Center Drive, and Nov. 2 at the downtown Pavilion, 500 Procter St. The Drive Thru Flu Clinic will be open from 7:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Vaccinations are $10. Adults only.

An appeal has been denied in the 2014 murder conviction for which Joshua Jerrod Thomas, 27, of Port Arthur is now serving a 60-year sentence.

Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call in reference to an industrial incident at the TOTAL facility in the 7400 block of 32nd Street in Port Arthur. Upon arrival, deputies were directed to the coke pits at the facility, where they learned a bulldozer occupied by one individual had entered the pits and become submerged.

To kick off the 2015-16 school year, the Port Arthur Library is inviting students to collaborate with artist Ted Ellis. This educational mini-workshop Saturday, Sept. 5, from 2-4 p.m. will be an interactive time to engage each student and teach the value of the arts. This will also be a time of encouragement for students to be creative and broaden their imagination. Ellis and students will design one large mural together by the end of the workshop.
