After months of discussion and strong public outcry against the facility, the Port Arthur City Council effectively dealt a deathblow to a proposal to build a meat-processing plant at a Jade Avenue business park.

April 5, the Port Arthur City Council tabled an agenda item that would prohibit land on Jade Avenue to be used for a “slaughterhouse or meat-processing plant” after Riceland Farms recently brought a proposal for such a facility before the Port Arthur Economic Development Corporation (EDC).

With 490 votes cast for a turnout of 4.65 percent of the 10,548 registered voters in Port Arthur’s District 4, Keith McCurry Richard received 303 votes, or 62.73 percent, to win the City of Port Arthur Special Election on April 2. Richard will finish the unexpired term of Stephen Mosely, who resigned from city council to run for a county commissioner’s seat.

Alicia Gayle Marshall received 180 votes, or 37.27 percent.

The ongoing battle against corruption among city of Port Arthur staffers continues as yet another former water department employee was charged with metal theft by a public servant on March 30, reports the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

Raymond Patrick Johnson, a City of Port Arthur Water Department employee assigned to the Water Distribution Department, was formally charged by the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office with one third-degree felony count of theft of metal by a public servant and subsequently arrested March 18.
