Paying tribute to the fallen heroes whose sacrifices paved the way for America’s freedom and who have given their lives to protect this nation and its citizens is important to Southeast Texans as evidenced by the many Memorial Day community celebrations across the area commemorating those brave souls.

As of Monday, Sept. 25, the American Red Cross has invested more than $100 million in Texas alone in the aftermath of Tropical Storm/Hurricane Harvey, with roughly $12 million of those dollars going directly to aid residents of the Golden Triangle, according to Red Cross Regional Communications Manager Ekland Durousseau.

FEMA spokesperson Ken Higginbotham said that starting Wednesday, Sept. 13, the federal agency is collaborating with multiple local, state and federal agencies to offer what is essentially a “one-stop stop” for Harvey victims seeking assistance in recovery. From 7 a.m. through 7 p.m., seven days a week, the first FEMA/state Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) for the Golden Triangle will set up camp at the Goodwill located at 2871 Stagg Drive in Beaumont.

Distributing food and water in three locations in the Golden Triangle, The Salvation Army served more than 1,800 families Tuesday, Sept. 5. This is in addition to the more than 5,000 meals served through its mobile kitchens working throughout the Golden Triangle.

With additional supplies scheduled to arrive Wednesday morning, a second day of distribution is scheduled for the afternoon. Starting at 1 p.m., The Salvation Army will provide boxes of food pre-packed to feed a family for several days, as well as cases of bottled water.

Update 8/28:

Bevil Oaks and Northwest Forest are now under mandatory evacuation orders, according to County Judge Jeff Branick as of 11:15 a.m. on Monday, August 28. 

Lamar University classes scheduled for Wednesday, August 30 have been canceled.  This cancellation is in addition to those announced for Monday and Tuesday. The university hopes that classes can resume on Thursday, August 31.

A Port Arthur man arrested during a warrant search at a gaming site at 2680 Washington Blvd. in Beaumont was indicted Aug. 23 for possession of a controlled substance after police allegedly found a rubber ball containing “liquid weed” inside the man’s jacket.

While the district as a whole “met standard,” multiple Beaumont ISD campuses were rated as “improvement required” in the 2017 accountability reports released on Tuesday, Aug. 15.

Smith, MLK, and South Park middle schools are all improvement required. Vincent, Odom, and Marshall middle schools met standard.

Caldwood, Pietzch-MacArthur, Blanchette, Martin, Jones-Clark, Charlton Pollard and Fehl elementary schools are all rated improvement required. Curtis, Fletcher, Guess, Amelia, Regina, Homer, and Dishman elementary schools met standard.

Lamar University’s Center for Innovation Commercialization and Entrepreneurship (CICE) is partnering with faith-based and community organizations for the first ever Port Arthur Hope & Opportunity Event. The free community event with be Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Booker T. Elementary School, located on 1300 Freeman Avenue in Port Arthur, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Hope & Healing Grief Support Group, offered by the Samaritan Counseling Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur, will be meeting from September 11, 2017 at 5:30 PM to Monday, October 30, on Monday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

More than 1,100 Port Arthur ISD stakeholders turned up to vote on a tax increase proposed by the school district on and in advance of Election Day — Saturday, Aug. 5. With more than 57 percent of the vote, or 654 ballots, the tax increase passed.
