Rayburn

The first bass tournament of the year was held Jan. 14 at Sam Rayburn by Bass Champs, and out of 397 teams entered, John Iles and Brian Shook won with 30.75 pounds and took home $20,000.

When it was all said and done, 794 anglers caught a total of 646 bass with an average weight of 3.11 pounds. Right at 123 limits were caught, while 266 teams didn’t weigh in a single bass.

This 3-pound bass ate a 12-inch worm fished at the base of the tree in the backg

With surface water temperatures on East Texas lakes holding steady in the mid to upper 80s, one thing is certain – bass are going to be feeding deep. Three of the best lures to catch deep bass are crankbaits, worms and jigs.

A few days ago I was fishing with Dennis Lala, who has been catching bass on Texas lakes for over 60 years.

Rayburn is good for bass and crappie. On Toledo Bend, catches of catfish on trotlines and jug lines are very good. The bass fishing there has been improving with fish up to six pounds being caught on jigs and Carolina rigged worms fished along shorelines in 3 to 5 feet of water.

Trout are difficult to pin down on Sabine Lake and East Galveston Bay. Your best

Fresh water from recent rains has caused bass fishing to surge, but on Sabine Lake, it’s making things difficult for anglers targeting reds, flounder and trout.

Sam Rayburn guide Bill Fondren says the water level there is about 7-1/2 feet high, and the fishing overall is slow.

The white bass run on Lake Livingston is excellent with upward of 100 fish being

I’ve got all sorts of outdoor news to send your way this week. First is the fantastic fishing for white bass on Lake Livingston. I’ve fished this lake for years and know for a fact that the white bass fishing right about now is second to none.

Roy James reports that he and his family are averaging 50 to 100 white bass per trip while fishing extended points on the middle and upper areas of the lake. The best tactic is to use white or yellow jigging spoons with buck tail trailers. The best catches are in 15 to 20 feet of water.
