Leaders of a new initiative in Southeast Texas hope to make people feel comfortable about coming out about their mental health problems.

The new campaign lets people know that’s it’s OK to talk about these problems and that they are not alone in their daily struggles.

Civic, business, and community leaders and health care professionals, social workers, law enforcement officers, and educators all converged at Broussard’s Centre’ Thursday, March 9 for the announcement of a new mental health initiative being spearheaded by Gift of Life founder Regina Rogers and Kim Phelan.

IEA – Inspire, Encourage, Achieve recently honored Winston Brown for his 16 years of service, providing transportation, mentoring and support to hundreds of youth.

IEA hosted the community gathering at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church at which IEA participants and their families, as well as community leaders and program volunteers, were recognized.

Geralyn Lucas, 20-year cancer survivor, author, speaker and mom from New York City was wowed by Texas-style chivalry as she was ushered onto the stage during her recent speaking engagement at the Gift of Life Survivor Celebration at the MCM Eleganté on Thursday, Feb. 4. In fact, she described everything about her Southeast Texas experience as an immersion in charm, warmth and hospitality.

Endorsing the Gift of Life’s mission to save lives, owners of Tri-Con Inc. (dba Exxpress Mart) Imad and Elias Sarkis implemented a holiday giving campaign at their 20 regional convenience stores, generating $22,500 —almost double last year’s campaign to further the Gift of Life’s healthcare and educational programs.

Since 1984, the Ben Rogers Employment Training Facility in Beaumont has functioned as a place for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to acquire valuable work skills and learn a work ethic essential to becoming productive members of society.

Nineteen Beaumont Independent School District graduates were awarded scholarships totaling $25,000 through the Ben Rogers/Lamar University/BISD “I Have A Dream” Program Wednesday, June 11, at a banquet held in the BISD boardroom. Graduates received trophies along with their scholarships, as family and friends proudly observed.
