There seems to be a lack of the fruits of the Spirit of God in many of our lives in this day and age. Some have never even heard of living and demonstrating these fruits in their life and some do not believe they can undertake to do such a thing. The Bible talks about these fruits in the amazing book of Galatians in Scripture.

The Bible covers so many interesting topics and, from time to time, I receive questions about what a certain verse or phrase might mean. I always am intrigued when I study the question and try to determine what I feel the Scripture is saying. I received an interesting one this past week: “What does it mean in the Book of Matthew when we are told to shake the dust off of our feet?”

I am a planner, somewhat of an organizer, appreciate things done on time and in an efficient manner, and like to know where I am headed in my daily chores, in my work, in travel, having fun, and in life in general. As this year comes to a close and we are set to begin a new one, I have been giving thought to where I am in life and what I want accomplish in the coming months. I still have goals, plans and dreams at 74 years of age, and believe that as long as I am alive, I should be reaching for them with every ounce of my being.

The big week is almost here, and for me, it is a big week indeed. My birthday is Dec. 23, and then we have the blessed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For those of us celebrating a different kind of Christmas this year for whatever reason, please let me assure you with confidence that God knows all about each of our Christmases and what we will have and what we will not have.

It is no big secret to those who know me well that my biological mother and I did not get along. There were many reasons, and looking back on them now that I am older and have grown children of my own, I see more of the complications that caused the often very turbulent waters. Some changes and a lot of understanding could have been made easier for all of us had I known then what I know now. Such is life.

Life sometimes hits us with surprise after surprise. This seems especially true the older we become. I go to way too many funerals these days, and seldom a week goes by that I don’t get a call letting me know of the death of a friend or a relative. I said to someone at the funeral home last night, “We really have to quit meeting like this.” My friend laughed as we remembered the last occasion where we visited together.

Some things in life are few and far between, and when they come along, we would be wise to take advantage. I fear looking around my own environment that way too many young couples – and older ones alike – simply live too fast. There is little time to actually teach, inspire, motivate and help others.

OK, OK, I know that many of you no longer actually pick up a book, open the covers, and turn the pages. I am familiar with Kindle, iPads, various other readers on the market, and my computer, but for me, although I have several devices, I still prefer the bound book. It doesn’t have to be a hardback or library edition. A good paperback will suffice, and a loaned or gifted copy is great, too. In fact, I have been thinking of ways to get our readers to share books they’ve already read with others.

In recent weeks, I have written about a very famous Texan, Larry McMurtry of Archer City. I was privileged to visit the small Texas town, meet many of its residents, shop in its old stores in the downtown area, and eat several times in the local Dairy Queen, made ultra famous in The Last Picture Show.
