NOAA Fisheries awarded nearly $3 million in grants Sept. 1, 2016, to support the conservation and recovery of protected marine species through stranding response and marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation.

Through the John H. Prescott Marine Mammal Rescue Assistance Grant Program, NOAA awarded 32 grants to nonprofit organizations, aquariums, universities, and coastal state, local and tribal governments that are members of the National Marine Mammal Stranding Network.

Workers on a boat under Veterans Memorial Bridge in Orange County recovered the body of a 54-year-old woman Aug. 2, reports the Orange County Sheriff's Office. 

According to a news release from OCSO, deputies responded to a call for assistance on a welfare concern at the bridge at approximately 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday. When deputies arrived, they were advised a white female had been rescued from the water by workers that had been in a boat working under the bridge.

Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt reportedly rescued two fishermen over the weekend after they got stuck in muddy marsh and became stranded while they were preparing for the Elite Series Bass Tournament coming to Orange in March, reports the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Two duck hunters stuck in the marsh near Adams Bayou and the Inter-Coastal Waterway in Orange were rescued by Sheriff Keith Merritt after calling the Orange County Sheriff's Office for help on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at about 7:40 a.m.

According to a news release from OCSO, the hunters were attempting to navigate a duck blind when the boat became stuck in the icy muck. The two men reportedly tired to free the boat for several hours but were unsuccessful.
