The 30th annual Los Cazadores deer contest is getting plenty of entries, with so

Deer hunting across much of Texas is better than expected with some pretty decent bucks being tagged, and the does that I’ve seen while deer hunting in East Texas and the Hill Country are in great shape. Also, we’re beginning to see more ducks settling into the Southeast Texas marsh and along the middle Texas coast.

Opening weekend of deer season and the north zone opener on ducks was on the soggy side, but at least we got our first good cold front that should set the stage for excellent deer hunting this week.

One way to beat the heat during August and September is to fish at night aboard

August is among the best months to be fishing the surf for trout and reds on the upper Texas coast. This past week was outstanding with calm winds, green tides and excellent catches of trout by waders and boaters in the surf from the Sabine jetties down to Galveston. Trout were best on topwaters early, then switching over to soft plastics like a 5-inch Egret Wedge Tail, in either chartreuse or pearl. Reds were best on gold spoons worked in the first gut on a green tide.

Dove and teal seasons are fast approaching with the Sept. 1 opener in the Centra

Opening day of the Central Zone dove season is Sept. 1, followed up by the Sept. 12 teal season and the South Zone dove opener Sept. 18. It’ll all be happening before you know it, and that’s why now – as in today – is a good time to start getting everything together.

Cuong Nguyen caught this tagged red while fishing at the Galveston jetties last

As of this week, three lucky anglers who were signed up for the CCA STAR tourney have caught tagged redfish. Each of them has won a Ford truck, and a 23-foot Haynie boat, motor and trailer.

The last thing you would expect while mowing the back 40 is to have a copperhead snake crawl out of the motor and on to the steering wheel, but that’s exactly what happened to Dodd Coffey this past weekend.

Trout are difficult to pin down on Sabine Lake and East Galveston Bay. Your best

Fresh water from recent rains has caused bass fishing to surge, but on Sabine Lake, it’s making things difficult for anglers targeting reds, flounder and trout.

Sam Rayburn guide Bill Fondren says the water level there is about 7-1/2 feet high, and the fishing overall is slow.

Big trout like this one are still being caught on Lake Calcasieu with mullet imi

The fantastic trophy trout fishing that was being kept very quiet on Sabine Lake came to a sudden halt about a week ago when we got a tidal wave of rain and runoff. All that rain water coming down the Sabine River put the skids to a “hot” trout bite, and definitely didn’t do white bass fishermen any favors, either.

The Houston Boat Sport and Travel show has once again delivered the latest in boats and motors. It continues through Sunday, Jan. 11. While there last weekend, I got a good look at the all new Evinrude E-TEC G2, and I also checked the array of boats that Texas Marine had on display.

This week’s blast of cold weather will more than likely send big-time numbers of ducks and geese down the Central Flyway. The duck season so far has been hit and miss here in Southeast Texas, but the numbers of ducks on the middle Texas coast is definitely better than expected.
