Formula 1 speedboats will once again be racing down the Sabine River in Orange at speeds of more than 115 mph at the ninth annual Showdown on the Sabine, which covers three days from Friday, Sept. 16, through Sunday, Sept. 18, at the City of Orange Boat Ramp at 1000 Simmons Drive.

Speedboats of the Deep South Racing Association (DSRA) will be roaring down the Sabine River in Orange at speeds of more than 100 mph during the Shootout on the Sabine, with plenty of high-octane outboard action on Saturday, May 21, and Sunday, May 22, plus a special concert with American Idol fan favorite Kree Harrison.

Admission to the event is free, and there will be food and adult beverage vendors onsite. No pets or coolers allowed.

Traffic is currently backed up into Port Arthur and through Pleasure Island and into Louisiana due to an emergency on the MLK bridge on SH 82. The MLK bridge could possibly be closed. Expect delays.

The white bass run is getting stronger by the day on the Sabine and Angelina rivers with the falling water level and the clarity just about right, according to guide Bill Fondren. The boat ramps that were underwater last week are in the process of being cleaned up and by the middle of this week should be ready to use.

This year’s event will include food and craft booths, an adult beverage booth and pit passes to enter the race area, and several children’s activities. Admission is free, as well as parking.

Emergency responders rescued two contract surveyors who got mired in a marsh while performing a job for the Navigation District on Wednesday, Sept. 2, reports the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The Examiner caught up with Southeast Texas’ own country music sensation Tracy Byrd for an interview ahead of the Orange County River Festival, which will feature a performance by Byrd on Saturday, March 21 at 6 p.m. sponsored by STI Group. On top of enjoying his top hits, folks in attendance are expected to hear a huge announcement by the entertainer as well, “a milestone in his career,” according to Byrd.
